Hand carved Soapstone Animals. These are soapstone animals from Peru, hand carved by Peruvian artisans. Wonderfully detailed and highly colorful miniature animals with eyes. Each carved animal was done by hand, high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. No two are exactly alike and all are so well detailed!

Soapstone (also known as Steatite or Soaprock) - Soapstone is a metamorphic rock, a talcschist. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is thus rich in magnesium. It is produced in areas where tectonic plates are subducted, changing rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids, but without melting. It has been a medium for carving for thousands of years.
