'Uinta Basin' Spelling Rule:
If we are geographically speaking, the Uinta Basin should always be spelled without the 'h,' regardless of how it is used -- whether used by itself or used as part of a larger name! The spelling for Uinta Basin (without the 'h') was established by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, a Federal agency in the 1800s, to be used when referring to geographic features. You will notice that there are several misuses of spelling in names where Uinta Basin is part of a larger name or when referring to the Uinta Basin itself. In these instances, the Uinta Basin (without the 'h') is being called by the wrong name and ultimately only planting false information.
While we call the human part of the Basin, Uintah with an H, we should still remember that the basin itself, as a landform, should be spelled Uinta. (More)
