"Preserving Uinta Basin Heritage"
The Uintah County Heritage Museum, previously located within Uintah County’s Western Park Complex, opened it’s doors June 29th, 1991. In 2014, the Museum celebrated its move to 155 E. Main Street in Vernal, Utah. The transition has been a key factor in the changes we have made to become the museum we are today.
Over 30 years later, the Heritage Museum is telling stories of the past, connecting them to the present, and projecting how even in the future we will be a part of the past. We thank all the families who have donated artifacts and helped us find stories to make them relevant to our time.
Uintah County Heritage Museum features displays of individuals and groups of people, who traveled into the Uinta Basin and decided to stay. It is a story of strength and change. We share the history of outlaws such as the famous Butch Cassidy, and lawmen like John T. Pope, "The Sheriff to the Outlaws." The Ute People, many of whom were forced to live and adapt to the harsh environment here while others took their homelands. The Fremont People, who are no longer around to tell their story. Entrepreneurs, who chose to come and build a community that has prospered. The stories of those who found financial success by tapping into the Basin's natural resources, and the ranchers and homesteaders who divided up the land into what became the Basin we know today.
Come in and explore the journey of the people who made this high mountain desert their home.
