Tales from Indian Country: Authentic Stories and Legends from the Great Uinta Basin
by George Emery Stewart, Jr.
George Emery Stewart, Jr. was one of the those colorful 'old timers' whose life spanned the 'old days' and the 'modern days.' He was born in Vernal, Utah in 1906. His early playmates were Indian boys and he spoke Ute fluently. Through his close association and friendship with the Ute tribe, he developed a keen understanding of their ways and beliefs.
Later, his family moved to Myton, where his mother ran a hotel. Here be met Elza Lay, a retired member of "The Wild Bunch". He listened for hours to Elza Lay. George had a natural interest for history, the facts, and how they happened. His brilliant mind never forgot a detail.

NOTE: The correct official spelling for Uinta Basin is without the 'h'. Many make the mistake of adding the 'h' at the end of Uinta, as in Uintah County. However, regardless of how it is used -- by itself or as part of a larger name -- Uinta Basin is only spelled correctly without the 'h'. See Informational Flyers for further information.
